Police Attacks - Officer Down, Programme on BBC

Norrie Flowers , Chairman said

“First, I'd like to thank Sam Polling and everyone at the BBC who worked on this programme.

The Federation has been trying for years to highlight this problem but it sometimes takes a high quality, high profile TV programme to get the message across.

The levels of assaults are far too high.

The number of cases which go through the court are far too few.

The sentences passed, too often, don't act as a deterrent.

These things need to be addressed.

Beyond that we have to ensure that self protection training and equipment are good quality and kept up to date.  Over the years we have introduced improved handcuffs, batons and CS spray.  Beyond that we would like to see wider deployment of tazers.

Our principal aim is the protection of the public, but for us to be able to do that we must be able to protect ourselves and the courts and other authorities need to play their part.
