Report - Safety First - A Thematic Inspection of Personal Protective
Equipment in the Scottish Police Service |
Douglas J Keil, General
Secretary of the Scottish Police Federation said
"We welcome the Report and support the call for commonality of
protective equipment across forces, a mandatory body armour policy,
improved regular training and better collation and analysis of information.
In the ten year period between 1993 and 2004 there were an average
of 9,500 assaults on police officers in Scotland each year. There
was a drop in the statistics in 2000 - 2002 which we put down to better
protective equipment but unfortunately the numbers have risen again.
We want to see continuing improvements in protective equipment and
training and in addition, better protection from the courts. In 2001
we calculated that the average fine for assaulting the police was
£152. That does not compare well with the national average fine
of £277 for all offences."
