Subject: SPL
call for ‘rethink’ on alcohol ban in Scottish football grounds.
Joe Grant, General Secretary of the Federation said,
“We are totally opposed to any relaxation of the drink ban at football matches. The SPL may be looking at the financial situation but public safety is more important than that.
Unfortunately our culture does not deal well with alcohol and selling drink inside football grounds would be a recipe for disaster. Emotions run high at many games as it is and mixing that with drink is simply asking for trouble.
Recent good work on anti-social behaviour, racism and sectarianism at football matches would be wiped out if the ban was lifted.
Football stadia are much more pleasant places than they used to be 27 years ago and this is largely down to the alcohol ban. There should be no change.”
